Some weeks ago I said to you that my mom was diagnosed with Uterine Cancer in stage 3, so I made an Indiegogo campaign to help her with the treatment.

I want to capture the attention of the young people that aren’t aware of Cancer by making a contrast of concepts, sometimes we are pissed off by little things as a dropped ice cream or youtube restrictionsbut if you stop and think how many people have hard problems in the world like cancer you will think twice before getting anger.

My real goal is pass the goal of $5k lot of people says that $5k isn’t enough for a whole threatment of Cancer so I really hope to pass that goal with your help.

This vaguely reminds me of the experiences I had in the earlier days of being a musician. The last “job” I had was working at a cafe in Katonah, NY owned by the musician Sloan Wainwright. One day she took me outside and sat me down and told me she wanted me to leave and figure out how to make my living playing music and doing art. She told me to do whatever it took even if that meant making sacrifices.

I promised I would.

Being fired/freed coupled with a lifetime of having my parents never express their doubts (if they had them) to me about whatever crazy road I was on, busting their asses for years and years so they could help finance their kids’ dreams (while they struggled to make the mortgage), and allowing me to move back in with them so I could galavant around NYC for 6 years playing my guitar and passing tip jars, gave me the space and time to do what I do and figure out how to do it in a way that works for me.

This meme reminds me of how incredibly lucky I have been. Being given emotional and financial support as an artist is an immense gift and a huge privilege. I want to express my eternal gratitude.

I also want to tell people who appreciate and rely on art and music, and who have the means, to please support art and music and the people who make it.

It is so easy these days to get everything for free but that doesn’t mean you have to.

And to the makers of stuff- keep making it. Especially those of you who feel it in the deepest depths of your being, those of you who couldn’t stop if you tried because making your art saves your life…I believe in you. I hope you are given the opportunity to just do art.

I met a man on a plane recently who said he was upset because his daughter decided to study music and he believed she would never get anywhere. He said he just couldn’t get behind it.

But the other day I met a little boy selling paintings by the side of the road. Panda and I bought a few, while his mom stood on the other side of the fence smiling proudly.

When I was in 4th grade Ira Lee gave me 10 bucks to write his book report on To Kill A Mockingbird. That book changed my life.

Every day I pass a tree with a big hole in it near my house and I think of that book. Thank goodness for that book.
